Cybercriminals these days are becoming ever more creative in their efforts to scam computer users out of their money through fake security programs that they sell online. Aside from rogue antivirus and anti-spyware programs, cybercriminals are also creating rogue defragmentation programs in order to scare computer users that their computer has several errors in its hard drive. Be aware that not all defragmentation programs promoted online are legitimate, and you must not trust anything with your credit card information online, unless if it has been verified to come from a reputable source.

The Spread of the Notorious HDD Repair and its Manifestations

HDD Repair is a fake optimization, or defragmentation tool, that tries to scam gullible computer users into buying a useless software product. PCHubs malware researchers have confirmed that HDD Repair is a clone of Hard Drive Diagnostic, Win HDD and HDD Diagnostic which were all previously confirmed to be rogue defragmentation programs. Since it is related to a family of rogue antivirus programs or security applications, HDD Repair seems to be another rogueware that must not be trusted. With its relatives having a history of being a rogueware application, it is just proper to treat HDD Repair with caution and not to trust it with your personal credit card information.

HDD Repair spreads to computers through Trojans or fake online scanners that install the rogueware to the computer system without requiring permission from the computer user. Upon successful installation on the infected computer, HDD Repair would perform a fake system scan with a legitimate-looking graphical user interface. This deceptive GUI makes HDD Repair confusing for the unsuspecting computer user, causing a lot of victims to fall into this scam. The fake system scan yields a fabricated scan result showing that the infected computer has several hard drive errors as well as registry errors that can only be repaired upon purchase of a full version of HDD Repair. This is where the rogueware redirects the computer user to their website’s purchase page to lure the victim to divulge his credit card information to purchase the fake HDD Repair program. You must not be fooled by this rogueware, as various security analysts can confirm that HDD Repair is just a fake program and buying it will just be a waste of money.

How to Stop HDD Repair with its Annoying and Notorious Alerts

PCHubs PC research team has also noted that HDD Repair was designed with capabilities to resist its removal. This is done with its features of being able to block legitimate security programs from running on your PC. It very strongly and highly recommended that HDD Repair be removed from your computer as soon as you see the initial manifestations of infection. Keeping HDD Repair on your computer would increase the potential risk for damage and would make your computer more vulnerable to security breaches and computer attacks. Removing HDD Repair as soon as possible ensures that there is less damage done to your PC.

A trustworthy security application that is duly updated will do the trick of removing HDD Repair. Make sure to do the removal process in Safe Mode, so that HDD Repair does not resist the removal procedures.
