What If Your Email Provider Could Block Fake Emails?
July 8, 2008 – 2:30 pmWhat if you had certain features built into your email service that blocked fake eBay, PayPal and other phishing or spam messages? You would probably be a happier person right? In the perfect world we would never have any spam or phishing emails and we would not have to worry about getting scammed. Unfortunately we do not live in THAT perfect world yet. The “real world” reveals to us that hackers are out to scam us and it is not much that our email providers do about it until now.
Email providers such as Google’s Gmail are now blocking fake eBay and PayPal emails. This comes as a surprise because usually people complain that their email inbox is so full of spam and junk emails and no one is willing to do anything about it unless you spend money. Other email providers such as yahoo have followed suit and offer this type of email blocking built into your email features.
Fake eBay and PayPal messages are usually ones that require that you enter your eBay or PayPal login or personal information so that remote users or hackers are able to steal money from your account. Other spam emails that claim to be from eBay and PayPal may ask that you conduct business with certain people that are actually scammers. These types of emails are nothing new but your email provider taking steps to actually block them is new.
Do you think that other companies that provide free email or even paid email services will start blocking spam or phishing emails in the near future? Will this have a negative impact on people thinking that this will invade their privacy or block legitimate emails?
